Suspected grave vandal rescued after spending 2 days buried waist-deep in Soweto

A suspected grave vandal was rescued by the police in South Africa, after apparently spending two days buried up to his waist in a grave in the Avalon Cemetery in Soweto, Gauteng.

On Monday at approximately 11:00, police responded to a call from a security guard who had found a 31-year-old man buried waist-deep in the cemetery in Klipspruit West. He had apparently been screaming for help for two days.

Multiple online sources including a twitter hand STAY SAFE RSA shared a video with the caption ‘He was trying to dig out and steal a Coffin @ Avalon Cemetery …… Community tried to bury him alive … He was saved by Police.

Others said that, the vandal was beaten and his feet bound with shoelaces and buried up to his lower body, possibly in one of the graves he tried to vandalize.

Police spokesperson Captain Mavela Masondo said the man claimed to have been buried since Saturday.

“Paramedics were called and he was transported to hospital for treatment.”

According to Masondo, the circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear. While there was speculation that residents had buried the man for allegedly trying to steal a coffin, Masondo would not confirm this.

“The man is currently in hospital. As soon as he has sufficiently recovered, we can obtain a statement as to what exactly happened.”
