Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari has appointed Major General Farouk Yahaya as the new Chief of Army Staff – the third officer to hold the post this year.
The announcement put an end to speculations in Social media that another general from the South East maybe named for the position.
Major General Farouk Yahaya takes on the task as the country faces widespread insecurity, from nationwide kidnappings for ransom to fighting a more than decade-long jihadist insurgency.
Prior to his appointment Major General Yahaya was the General Officer Commanding 1 Division of the Nigerian Army and the incumbent Theatre Commander of the Counter terrorism Counter Insurgency military outfit in the North East code named Operation HADIN KAI, according to a statement released by Brig. Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, Ag Dir. Defence Information.
His predecessor, Lt-Gen Ibrahim Attahiru, was killed in a plane crash last Friday.
He had only taken up the post in January following a major overhaul of the military’s top brass.
