Kenya replaces finance minister a day after corruption charge

Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta has appointed Labour Minister Ukur Yatani as acting finance minister after Henry Rotich was charged with corruption, the presidency said on Wednesday.

Julius Muia was appointed as principal secretary in the finance ministry, replacing Kamau Thugge, who was charged alongside Rotich, said the statement sent by the president’s spokeswoman.

Mr Rotich pleaded not guilty to charges of flouting procurement procedures in awarding a contract worth more than $450m (£405m) for the construction of two dams to an Italian firm, CMC de Ravenna.

The company also denies any wrongdoing.
