Gunmen open fire on a bus in central Mozambique killing 3

Unidentified gunmen suspected to be dissident Renamo junta opened fire on a bus, killing three of its passengers, in the central Mozambican province of Sofala.

Thursday morning’s incident is the third attack in the area, near the former military headquarters of the opposition Renamo party, which has signed a peace deal with the government.

The headquarters are now occupied by dissidents calling themselves the Renamo Military Junta.

But no group has said it was responsible for the attack.

According to reports reaching the capital, Maputo, the attack occurred in the morning on the country’s main north-south highway.

The attackers raked the bus with gunfire, and then escaped back into the bush, leaving three passengers dead and several others injured, four of them seriously.

Eyewitnesses described the interior of the bus as “soaked with blood”.
