Court hands Barcelona star Lionel Messi a 21 months jail term over tax

Argentine soccer star and F.C Barcelona striker Lionel Messi was handed a shock sentence today by a Spanish court sitting in Barcelona. According to a report monitored from Reuters the reigning world footballer of the year was handed a 21 months prison time plus a fine of 2 million euros for three tax crimes.

Skynews, however said that Messi is unlikely to face any time in jail as a term of under two years in duration usually results in a period of probation under Spanish law.

The court also found his father,Jorge Messi guilty of three tax offences, he was also handed a 21-month prison term

Lionel Messi, who is understood to earn £26m in annual salary under his current club contract.
