The African Centre for Leadership, Strategy and Development a non governmental organisation based in Nigeria on Tuesday, June 7th, 2016 launched the #DoMiningRightCampaign. The campaign seeks to achieve a solid mineral sector where the right approach to mining is adopted to increase revenue, promote diversification of the economy, improve the welfare of the people, protect the environment and ensure sustainable development.
A statement jointly signed by Ms. Ngozi Izuora and Mr. Omaojor Ogedoh of the Centre, said the campaign which is targeted at all stakeholders is to forestall and put an end to all forms of informal mining which overtime have had far reaching negative consequences on the life of citizens and the economy. Of note is the activities of small-scale gold miners that resulted in serious lead poisoning incident in Niger State. Similar incident occurred in Zamfara State in 2010 where over 400 children died. #DoMiningRight Campaign will therefore seek to address issues around small scale and illegal mining.
This campaign is apt at this point following the desire of the Buhari led Administration to increase accountability for all derived Public Revenue following the joining of the Open Government Partnership (OGP).
As the campaign is launched today, the general public is enjoined to join and take ownership of the campaign so that collectively, we would have a mining sector that will improve the economy and not degrade the environment and destroy the livelihood of the People.
