Bombs explodes in Akure, Nigeria, destroying over 100 houses(with pictures)

Over a hundred houses including churches and residential buildings have been destroyed by a large explosion which split the ever busy Akure/Owo road into two, creating large craters big enough to swallow more than 20 sedans.

The explosion led to so varying speculations among social media uses and online bloggers as to what could be responsible for the explosions.

AfricanQuarters reliably gathered from residents of the area, how they saw some soldiers running away from the scene before the explosion, who also prevented residents from getting near the scene of the explosion before it occured.

This account was bolstered by an officer of the Nigerian police who spoke to newsmen at the scene, he said that ‘the military were moving some explosives from Akure to Abuja, when their vehicle developed problem.

The police officer said, from the explanation they got from the escort commander, they (the military) had to try and move the vehicle away from densely populated area to an area with less houses and possible human population, so that they could stop and check and possibly fix the problem.

When they finally stopped and checked they were alarmed by what they saw, smokes were emitting from the vehicle’s engine, when all effort to put out the fire failed, they quickly moved away from the scene.

In the language of the Police officer ‘the escort personnel following their standard drill procedure quickly left the scene and stopped others from getting close to the vehicle before the bombs exploded’.

Nigerians on social media have been giving varying explanation to the explosion, some said it was an asteroid even backing it up with quote from the US army, while others said it was a pipeline explosion – reminder of the explosion that happened at Abule Ado Lagos nearly a two weeks ago.
