22 people have been confirmed dead following a boat mishap in Niger state central Nigeria, according to a local emergency official on Wednesday.
Seven people were rescued from the accident on Tuesday, said Hussaini Ibrahim, spokesman for the Niger State Emergency Management Agency in central Nigeria.
The incident occurred around Mahuta community in Agwara local area of the state when the boat hit a log of wood inside the river and capsized.
He said the deceased were traveling from Yauri, a town in the northwestern state of Kebbi to Manhuta, in Niger State, the official said.
The official said that an investigation was underway to further confirm the cause of the mishap.
